More than 50% of the population allows their dog to stay indoors and sleep on its owner's couch or bed. For those of you who are interested in building a doghouse for your beloved pet, here are some simple rules to follow when considering what type of shelter you want to provide.
1. You should begin the process of building your dog house by making sure the house is large enough to accommodate the potential adult size of your animal. Humans enjoy having about 2 feet of air above us in a room so they can live without feeling claustrophobic. Your dog probably likes having so much space too. The comfort zone for both humans and dogs is about 1/3 of their standing height. To find out how much space the dog will need, take out a tape measure and measure your dog. Measure him standing, sitting squatting and, above all, measure the full dimension of the dog when he is in the most comfortable, relaxed and stretched position that he can adopt. Your dog should be able to look out the front entrance while he is standing and sitting. So that the dog does not have to significantly love his front shoulders or scratch his belly, make sure that the entrance is high enough. Stand over the dog and measure the width of the widest point of the animal's shoulders.
2. Remember to raise the doghouse several inches off the ground to allow air and water to flow underneath. To deter pests from invading the dog house and keep your dog's health in mind, remember how important ventilation is. Drill a few nickel-sized holes in the walls under the eaves. Install a wind block inside the house so the dog can use his own body heat to warm the area if it is very cold or windy outside. Consider adding a partial wall that will allow your dog to escape bad weather. Your animal can choose to simply sleep in the entry room or circle the maze wall of the inner arch towards the inner sanctuary. Your beloved pet would probably love to have a pillow or some kind of bedding to sleep on.
3. To prevent rain from entering the doghouse, make the floor sloped slightly towards the entrance and build the roof slightly sloped as well. Make sure the house is well insulated, but you shouldn't paint the interior.
4. In the United States, most storms come from the south and west, so make sure the dog house faces the other direction. Most dog house plans suggest that the dog house door faces east. Then the cold air will not be able to pass through the entrance.
5. It is suggested that you hinge the roof of the doghouse. This makes it easier for you to clean your dog's house. You should clean the dog's house as often as you bathe him.
If your dog lives outdoors, then he deserves to have a comfortable place to sleep and get out of inclement weather. Hopefully, these simple tips on how to build a doghouse will get you started.
